The Freedom From Religion Foundation will be holding their 48th annual convention in Myrtle Beach October 16-19 at the Hilton Myrtle Beach Resort at 10000 Beach Club Dr. This year’s event promises a compelling lineup of speakers, entertainment, and community-building. Musical satirist Roy Zimmerman will perform selections from his new social justice album Roadmap, while writer and trans advocate Chrissy Stroop will be honored with the Freethought Heroine Award for her work confronting Christian nationalism and moral panic. The convention also features major figures like Mary L. Trump, who will receive FFRF’s Emperor Has No Clothes Award, and acclaimed journalist Jamelle Bouie, who will be presented with the Clarence Darrow Award. Guests will also hear from actor and political commentator John Fugelsang, reproductive rights leader Nancy Northup, and courageous activists like Dr. Maggie Carpenter and Mubarak Bala.
Beyond individual honorees, the event includes FFRF’s third annual panel of secular state legislators, student award recipients, and reports from FFRF’s legal and legislative teams. Attendees can enjoy several ticketed meals, including the popular “NonPrayer Breakfast,” and a full schedule of presentations, receptions, and networking opportunities. The convention officially opens Friday morning, with early check-in and a social on Thursday. It concludes Sunday morning with membership and regional meetings. With Myrtle Beach’s oceanfront views and a strong program of secular thought and activism, the 2025 FFRF convention offers both inspiration and community for those advocating for the separation of church and state.
We expect to have a nice contingent of SHL members at the convention, and hope to use the opportunity to do some secular organizing with non-believers across the state. We want to encourage anyone from the community to come to the convention, and please let us know you plan to be there so we can include you in planning some get-togethers at the convention.
